Ulberg is champ, out with an ACL, and there is no interim.
Carlos Ulberg won the vacant light heavyweight title in April and tore his ACL in that fight; in April he said the plan going into surgery was six to eight months, and UFC has set no return date. Magomed Ankalaev is the top active 205 contender while Alex Pereira stays at heavyweight.
Carlos Ulberg is the UFC light heavyweight champion. He knocked out Jiří Procházka at UFC 327 on April 11 to win the vacant belt after Alex Pereira moved to heavyweight. He hurt his knee in that fight — an ACL, he confirmed to UFC.com — and had surgery in Las Vegas on April 16. Going into surgery, he told UFC.com the plan was six to eight months; UFC has set no return date. The UFC has not installed an interim champion at 205.
That is the whole near-term shape of the division: a real champion who cannot fight, a long recovery, and no temporary belt. Contender fights keep 205 moving; the title itself is parked.
Magomed Ankalaev is the top active light heavyweight who can be booked today. Procházka remains ranked after the vacant-title loss. Pereira is competing at heavyweight — ranking lists that still place him at 205 do not put him in line for Ulberg's belt while he stays upstairs.
Contender cards
At UFC 331, Alonzo Menifield beat Iwo Baraniewski by split decision. UFC 333 carries Azamat Murzakanov vs. Dominick Reyes. Both are depth bouts with no title attached. UFC.com has also booked Jiří Procházka vs. Navajo Stirling as the main event of its Nov. 21 Fight Night in Doha: No. 2 vs. No. 5 on the media panel, listed as a non-title bout.
What changed in April was the entire top: Pereira upstairs, Ulberg crowned and injured on the same night. What has not changed is the interim question. Unlike heavyweight — where Tom Aspinall vacated the undisputed title on Monday, Sept. 14 — Ulberg has not vacated. Until he returns or the UFC creates an interim, 205 runs on contender fights while the belt sits with a recovering champion.
