State of the Divisions

Ciryl Gane is the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion. UFC.com said so Sunday in a news item by Zac Pacleb that also booked his first defense: Gane vs. Josh Hokit at Polymarket UFC 334 on Nov. 14 at Madison Square Garden.

That is the official elevation. What has not updated yet are the public listings most fans check first.

Champion and title picture

Gane held the interim belt since June 14, when he stopped Alex Pereira by TKO in Round 2 at UFC Freedom 250. Tom Aspinall vacated the undisputed title on Monday, Sept. 14, citing ongoing eye complications that blocked medical clearance. He said he did not want to hold the division up and that he is not retiring. Between the vacate and Sunday’s news item, the division sat in a waiting window — interim on the athlete page, vacant on the calendar, elevation expected in the wires but not printed by the UFC.

Sunday closed that window. The Sep. 20 UFC.com piece called Gane the “undisputed heavyweight champion” and described “Gane’s promotion to undisputed champion.” The same item books Hokit as the challenger for Nov. 14 at The Garden. The announcement landed on the Crypto.com UFC 331 broadcast Saturday night in Los Angeles.

What UFC.com still shows

As of Sunday evening, Sept. 20, the athlete and rankings pages have not caught up:

- Gane’s athlete page still lists him as Interim Title Holder (last modified Sept. 15). - Aspinall’s athlete page still lists him as Title Holder. - The UFC.com rankings page still lists Aspinall as Heavyweight Champion, with Gane at No. 1 among ranked heavyweights.

That lag is site delay relative to Sunday’s UFC news primary — not evidence that the elevation did not happen. Until the badges and rankings header update, readers who only check those pages will still see the old dual picture. The division page should not treat that lag as the headline truth.

Contenders and booked fights

Josh Hokit is the booked challenger — not a speculative ask. Recent UFC.com rankings pulls have had him near the top of the ranked board; the title shot is a UFC news booking, not a rankings leapfrog argument. The UFC 334 event page still shows placeholder card lines in places; booking authority for the title fight is the news item and UFC social, not a fully populated fight-card UI.

Alexander Volkov remains among the top ranked heavyweights and faces Rizvan Kuniev on Oct. 24 at UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi — a ranked bout, not a title fight. Sergei Pavlovich sits near the same tier on recent pulls. Alex Pereira rematch talk remains campaigning; it is not on an event page.

In the days before UFC 331, Dana White indicated in secondary interviews that Gane would not be elevated. After the Los Angeles card, White corrected himself at the post-fight presser and confirmed Gane as undisputed. Secondary transcripts carried the line; the authoritative elevation language for print remains the Sunday UFC.com news item that also books the first defense.

What changed — and what is unresolved

What changed: Aspinall vacated; UFC news elevated Gane to undisputed; Gane–Hokit is booked for Nov. 14 at Madison Square Garden. What is unresolved: athlete badges and rankings still lag Sunday night; the 334 event page is not yet a fully populated card; Pereira rematch talk stays campaigning. The heavyweight picture is no longer “waiting on elevation.” It is waiting on the site to catch up — and on Nov. 14 at The Garden.
