State of the Divisions

Ciryl Gane is the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion. UFC.com said so Sunday in a news item by Zac Pacleb that also booked his first defense: Gane vs. Josh Hokit at UFC 334 on Nov. 14 at Madison Square Garden.

That is the official elevation, and the public listings fans check first now match it.

Champion and title picture

Gane held the interim belt since June 14, when he stopped Alex Pereira by TKO in Round 2 at UFC Freedom 250. Tom Aspinall vacated the undisputed title on Monday, Sept. 14, citing ongoing eye complications that blocked medical clearance. He said he did not want to hold the division up and that he is not retiring. Between the vacate and Sunday’s news item, the division sat in a waiting window — interim on the athlete page, vacant on the calendar, elevation expected in the wires but not printed by the UFC.

Sunday closed that window. The Sep. 20 UFC.com piece called Gane the “undisputed heavyweight champion” and described “Gane’s promotion to undisputed champion.” The same item books Hokit as the challenger for Nov. 14 at The Garden. The announcement landed on the Crypto.com UFC 331 broadcast Saturday night in Los Angeles.

What UFC.com shows

The athlete and rankings pages have caught up with Sunday’s news. As of about Sept. 22:

- Gane’s athlete page lists him as Title Holder. - The UFC.com rankings page lists Gane as heavyweight champion.

The Sunday-night lag — Interim Title Holder on Gane, Title Holder still on Aspinall, Aspinall still listed as champion on the rankings page — is resolved. Aspinall now sits No. 1 in the ranked list below Gane, without a title badge. It was site delay, not a competing version of the title.

Contenders and booked fights

Josh Hokit is the booked challenger — not a speculative ask. He is No. 4 in UFC's media-panel rankings, and the title shot came from a UFC booking, not a rankings argument. The UFC 334 event page lists Gane vs. Hokit as the heavyweight title bout.

Alexander Volkov remains among the top ranked heavyweights and faces Rizvan Kuniev on Oct. 24 at UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi — a ranked bout, not a title fight. Sergei Pavlovich, No. 3 in UFC's media-panel rankings, faces Alex Pereira at UFC 335 on Dec. 12, a heavyweight bout that is not for the title.

In the days before UFC 331, Dana White indicated in secondary interviews that Gane would not be elevated. After the Los Angeles card, White corrected himself at the post-fight presser and confirmed Gane as undisputed. Secondary transcripts carried the line; the authoritative elevation language for print remains the Sunday UFC.com news item that also books the first defense.

What changed — and what is unresolved

What changed: Aspinall vacated; UFC news elevated Gane to undisputed; Gane–Hokit is booked for Nov. 14 at Madison Square Garden; athlete badges and rankings have caught up. What is unresolved: the 334 event page is not yet a fully populated card, and Pereira rematch talk stays campaigning. The heavyweight picture is no longer waiting on elevation or on the site. It is waiting on Nov. 14 at The Garden.
