Justin Gaethje (28-5) is the undisputed UFC lightweight champion. Arman Tsarukyan is the clearest No. 1 contender the promotion has put in writing after Crypto.com UFC 331.

At UFC 331 on Saturday, Sept. 19 in Los Angeles, Tsarukyan knocked out Mauricio Ruffy by elbows at 4:56 of Round 1. Performance of the Night went to Tsarukyan. UFC.com’s recap framed the win in plain terms: Tsarukyan cemented his standing as the No. 1 contender in the lightweight division.

Champion and title picture

Gaethje unified the belt at UFC Freedom 250 with a corner-TKO of Ilia Topuria and has not defended. Secondary reporting has been consistent that he is not returning in 2026 and is targeting 2027. There is no interim title at 155. The UFC has not cut a temporary belt while the champion sits.

That is the contrast with heavyweight this same weekend: Ciryl Gane was named undisputed and booked into a Nov. 14 defense, while lightweight’s active contender picture sharpened without a title fight or interim on the books. Zero defenses for Gaethje. No printed return date. No interim. The belt stays with Gaethje; the argument after Saturday belongs to the challenger line.

Contenders after UFC 331

Arman Tsarukyan owns the near-term argument. The five-round co-main did not need five rounds; after early exchanges and failed takedown attempts along the fence, he landed the elbows that ended it. UFC.com noted his win streak and that recent finishes have come inside the distance. If the question before Saturday was whether he still sat at the front of the challenger line, the promotion’s own recap answered it.

Ilia Topuria remains high in the rankings after his first career loss — unbooked, and not yet reinserted into a title date. Charles Oliveira stays in the ranked picture without a printed title date of his own. Ruffy drops out of the live co-main path after the loss.

Tsarukyan’s win strengthens the 2027 title queue argument against a rankings picture that still includes Topuria and Oliveira. It does not print a title date. Fighter talk about a “next” shot is fighter talk. Renato Moicano vs. Tom Nolan remains on the Oct. 31 Apex calendar as lightweight depth, not a title-path announcement.
