Joshua Van (18-2) is the UFC flyweight champion, and the rematch that defined the class is finished.

At Crypto.com UFC 331 on Saturday, Sept. 19 in Los Angeles, Van beat Alexandre Pantoja by unanimous decision. The scorecards read 49-46, 48-47, and 50-45. Fight of the Night went to the main event. It is Van’s second consecutive title defense.

Champion and title picture

Van won the belt at UFC 323 when their first title fight ended in a Round 1 TKO after Pantoja was injured. He then defended against Tatsuro Taira at UFC 328, stopping Taira in Round 5. Saturday’s decision was the five-round validation bout the rematch was built to be — not a first title shot for either man.

UFC.com’s main-card recap described an early Pantoja surge before Van found his footing in the second and third. Pantoja put Van on the canvas in the fourth but could not advance. In the fifth, Van was the more active and effective of the two, landing in combination, dropping Pantoja, and pulling away. When the cards came in, all three judges had Van ahead. The rematch Pantoja had been asking for is over. The injury-asterisk that hung over their first meeting is no longer the open question in the division.

Van is now 18-2 on his athlete page, with the UFC 331 main event listed as a title defense. Two defenses in, both against ranked opposition, and the second one went the distance after a fight-week rematch that had been the entire near-term argument at 125.

Contenders while the next shot waits

Alexandre Pantoja remains the clearest name just under the belt after going the distance in a Fight of the Night rematch — but he is no longer the unfinished-business challenger. Manel Kape sits high in the UFC.com rankings and in the conversation; that is ranking noise and matchmaking talk, not a UFC date. Brandon Royval stays in the ranked picture without a title booking.

Van’s next challenger is not booked. Do not invent a Kape title fight. The nearest flyweight ladder fight on the calendar is Lone'er Kavanagh vs. Ramazan Temirov on Oct. 24 at UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi — a ranked bout, not a title eliminator announcement. That card also carries featherweight and bantamweight title fights; the flyweight bout is depth for the next tier, separate from who left Los Angeles with the belt.

What changed — and what is unresolved

What changed: Van retained; second defense is in the books; the rematch is closed; the injury-asterisk first meeting is no longer the open story. What is unresolved: who gets the next title shot. Until the UFC prints a challenger, the flyweight title picture moves from “unfinished rematch” to “who’s next” — and that fight is not on a card yet.
