Where Tom Aspinall’s UFC heavyweight title stands — and what Dana White actually said

Tom Aspinall remains the UFC heavyweight Title Holder. Ciryl Gane is the interim champion. Dana White has opened the door to a conversation about Aspinall’s future with the belt — he has not stripped him, and Aspinall has not vacated.

That is the status as of Sept. 13, 2026. Everything else is process, medical clearance, and what the UFC decides next.

What UFC.com says right now

On UFC.com’s athlete pages, Aspinall is listed as Title Holder. Gane is listed as Interim Title Holder. The rankings header still reads “Heavyweight Tom Aspinall Champion,” with Gane at No. 1 among ranked heavyweights — a display that can blur the dual-champ setup, but the athlete-page labels are clearer.

ESPN, covering Gane’s interim win in June, put it bluntly: the undisputed title still belonged to Aspinall.

None of that has changed in the official listing after White’s latest comments.

How we got here

At UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 25, 2025, Aspinall’s title defense against Gane ended in a no-contest. Accidental eye poke(s) late in Round 1 left Aspinall unable to continue; the bout was ruled a no-contest, not a disqualification, and Aspinall retained the heavyweight title.

Roughly a month later, Aspinall posted a medical report describing “significant traumatic bilateral Brown’s syndrome,” with persistent double vision and a finding that he was not medically cleared for combat at that time. Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn has since said Aspinall has undergone four eye operations. Independent confirmation of that surgery count from a medical board or athletic commission has not been published.

While Aspinall stayed out, the division moved. On June 14, 2026, at UFC Freedom 250 in Washington, D.C., Gane stopped Alex Pereira by TKO (strikes) at 1:27 of Round 2 and won the interim heavyweight title.

In late August, Aspinall released a statement pushing back on exit rumors: “I’m not leaving the UFC… We are talking with the UFC daily and they will update you guys always.”

What White said — and what he didn’t

On Sept. 9, White told media Aspinall was hurt and that, until the UFC hears differently, “the heavyweight division will just keep rolling.”

Three days later, at a Zuffa Boxing post-fight press conference, White was asked about the Aspinall situation in the shadow of Valentina Shevchenko’s voluntary vacate of the women’s flyweight title. Shevchenko stepped aside Sept. 5 because of injury; Natalia Silva faces Wang Cong for the vacant belt in the UFC 332 main event.

Per consistent reporting from BBC Sport, MMA Mania, and others, White said the UFC would “definitely be talking about that,” added that Shevchenko did not want to tie up her division and that he assumed Aspinall felt the same way, said he did not personally know where Aspinall was health-wise, and that the promotion “should clear that up soon.”

White framed a discussion — including the Shevchenko-style path of not tying up a division — not an announcement that Aspinall had been stripped or ordered to vacate. Headlines that jump straight to “stripping” outrun what he said on the record.

The medical lane

Hearn, speaking around early September (as reported by Bloody Elbow and MMA Fighting), said Aspinall’s return timing is not only about mindset: from a commission perspective, further clearance and additional testing on his eyes are still required. Hearn also said Aspinall is training and wants to fight.

No athletic commission has published a statement clarifying Aspinall’s clearance status. Until a commission or UFC medical update lands, that part of the story rests on Hearn’s account and on the medical material Aspinall posted last year — not on a public ruling.
