Gaethje still holds the lightweight title — inactive into 2027, no interim, no defense booked

Justin Gaethje is still the UFC lightweight champion. As of Wednesday night, Sept. 23, his athlete page lists him as Title Holder, and UFC.com rankings still list him as lightweight champion. What the division does not have is a next title fight — or an interim belt while he sits.

How he got here

Gaethje (28-5) unified the undisputed lightweight title at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14, 2026, stopping Ilia Topuria by corner-TKO. He has not defended. Zero defenses since the night he became undisputed. The championship listing has not moved: Gaethje remains the champion on the pages fans check first.

What is not booked

There is no interim lightweight title. There is no lightweight title bout on the fetched UFC event pages. The nearest ranked lightweight action on the calendar is Renato Moicano vs. Tom Nolan at the Apex on Oct. 31 — a main event and ladder fight, not a title path and not an eliminator the promotion has labeled as such.
