Fighters make sacrifices, whether it be countless hours at the gym, self-control with their diet or even crashing on their coach’s couch.
Featherweight Jamie Driver (1-4) made the move to Miami from her hometown New Jersey to prepare for her bout against Morgan Hickam (0-1) on Nov. 1 at Valor Fighting Challenge 66 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
“I’m literally crashing on a beanbag couch right now in the corner of my coach’s house. I left my family and all my friends up in New Jersey,” Driver said, “but I love this sport so much and it’s worth the sacrifices.”
Driver came down to train at American Top Team, thinking she will only be in Coconut Creek for a two-month fight camp. After training under Muhammad Lawal, she decided to live and train permanently in South Florida.
“She told me her record and I told her ‘hey my goal is to get you to a winning record and get you to Bellator,’” Lawal said. “Right now, I’m trying to increase her fighting IQ. Win or lose, she’s gotten better and it’s something that we can keep building on.”
Driver has taken the advantage of sparring with the top fighters at American Top Team, alongside Joanna Smith and Sidney Outlaw, who introduced her to the Miami based MMA gym.
The New Jersey native will fight on the main card of Valor Fighting Challenge 66, taking place at Cotton Eyed Joe at 6 p.m. ET.
